The term innovation means a new way of doing something that adds value to the customer/ user. It may refer to incremental, radical, and revolutionary changes in thinking, products, processes, or organizations.

Innovation typically involves creativity, but is not identical to it: innovation involves acting on the creative ideas to make some specific and tangible difference in the domain in which the innovation occurs.

All innovation begins with creative ideas. For innovation to occur, something more than the generation of a creative idea or insight is required: the insight must be put into action to make a genuine difference, resulting for example in new or altered business processes within the organization, or changes in the products and services provided.

Innovation is as an organizational or management process. Innovation, like many business functions, is a management process that requires specific tools, rules, and discipline."

Innovation Strategy

An innovation strategy may include plans for

Creating new-to-the-world products and services e.g. things that have never existed before, have never been done or where no market currently exists.

Extending current products and services e.g. modifying existing products and services to add greater value.

Combining new-to-the-company products or services e.g. obtaining products or services that the organisation has never used before.

Developing new platform products of services e.g. creating a product or service that can be added to using ‘valued by the customer’ extensions.

Developing new tools or techniques to enhance the performance of a process.

TRIZ

TRIZ (Russian acronym for “Theory of Solving Inventive Problems”) is an inventive thinking and problem solving process. A brilliant Russian patent examiner, Genrich Altshuller, refused to accept the fact that invention and creativity were random acts. He thought we should be able to teach the process for developing new, successful inventions.

TRIZ has become an umbrella that covers a family of inventive concepts, tools and processes that have been used repeatedly to solve difficult problems and provide a general approach for inventive problem solving. TRIZ encourages a different level of thinking. Executives want people and teams who can think outside-the-box. TRIZ promotes a set of principles and questions that help people do just that.
